LAURINBURG — A new face has joined The Laurinburg Exchange’s newsroom with the addition of Kelsie Lopes as a summer intern.
“We’re happy to have Kelsie join us as she learns the aspects of reporting for a community newspaper,” said W. Curt Vincent, editor of The Exchange. “She has a very outgoing personality and shows a great deal of ambition — each of which are important characteristics.”
Lopes comes to the newspaper from Partners in Ministry, which she has been involved with since January 2019 after participating in workshops at Richmond Community College. Between May and June, she was involved with sewing masks, working as a mentor for the summer camp and assisting with the PIM food bank.
Originally from Knightdale, Lopes graduated from Knightdale High School in 2014. She now plans to attend Sandhills Community College in the fall top pursue an associate’s degree in arts, then transfer to work toward a bachelor’s degree in communications.
“I chose communications because every company, business or industry needs someone who can effectively communicate, so the opportunities are endless,” she said.
Lopes will serve as a general assignment reporter for The Exchange during her internship, handling a wide variety of stories after shadowing the two full-time reporters for a short time.
“I am very excited about my internship,” Lopes said. “To finally be able to work in a field that I am actually interested in and excel at is very satisfying. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be here.”
Lopes currently lives in Marston with her 3-year-old son Cole.
