Two additional coronavirus deaths bring Butte County’s total to 14 - Chico Enterprise-Record

OROVILLE — An update in Butte County Public Health’s COVID-19 dashboard Tuesday indicated that two additional county residents have died from virus-related complications.

According to the dashboard, the deaths occurred on Aug. 10 and 12, respectively.

Since introducing a new graph on the dashboard to show each date and the total number of deaths to date, Butte County Public Health said at an Aug. 13 press conference it will no longer be releasing a press release or statement for each additional virus-related death, unless an individual is not within one of the high-risk categories for the virus. Those categories include individuals ages 65 and over and individuals with chronic underlying health conditions.

To date, 10 county residents who passed away from virus-related complications were over 75 years of age, and the remaining four were between the ages of 65 and 74.

Butte County Public Health reported its first death due to COVID-19 on June 1. There were six deaths in July and there have been five to date in August.

Butte County Public Health does not report a date of death due to the virus until the department receives a death certificate that confirms COVID-19 as the underlying cause. The amount of time between a death and the processing of a certificate can “vary greatly,” Butte County Public Health director Danette York said.
