VSU basketball excited to bring back normalcy this weekend - WTXL ABC 27

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — The Valdosta State men's basketball team was 26 and 4 when their season was canceled due to COVID-19.

The talented group has a lot of people wondering what could have been.

The Blazers redemption tour begins Saturday, and while they'll be without Gulf South Player of the Year, Clay Guillozet.

They're still a talented group picked to with the Gulf South Conference's East Division.

The Lady Blazers are picked to finish fourth in the East in year two under head coach Deandra Schirmer.

They'll host West Georgia Saturday while the guys hit the road to face the Wolves. Both teams are just simply excited to get the season going.

"I feel like we're just happy to be back on the court. We feel very grateful to get the opportunity to do that," said Schirmer. "So we're excited to come back and to be able to do something and hopefully bring Blazer nation back together."

"I think everybody needs some type of unified force or unifying event to bring you back together and sports does that," says Valdosta State men's basketball head coach Mike Helfer." So I'm glad that we're going to be able to play and hopefully provide that to people."

Attendance for the women's home game will be capped at 1,100 at the Complex, and all fans are expected to wear masks.

Both games start at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
