QUINCY (WGEM) -- Blessing Hospital is partnering with local long-term care facilities like Sunset Home in Quincy to get more Certified Nurse Assistants in our region.
Administrators said when you have a loved one getting care at a nursing home or hospital, you want them to receive the best, but that's not possible without enough staff.
They say CNA's are the ones who bathe, feed and take care of residents and are an integral part of your loved ones day to day.
Jonna Egan, the CNA Program Coordinator, said this initiative is a way they can tackle a national issue, locally.
"Nursing assistants are the eyes and ears of the nurse. They provide that direct patient care and are such an integral part of all healthcare," Egan said.
She said the program is designed to train and educate people without any experience to earn their certification.
Dawn Hulett, a CNA has gone through the program and passed the state certification exam.
"I learned so much just hands on and just have a lot of compassion for everybody and providing it for my residents and seeing what's important to them and providing the best care," Hulett said.
Barbara Clow is a resident in the facility who she relies on CNA's like Hulett.
"They can make or break our day. Just…we depend on them and want a dependable aid that we know is going to be here and that we get used to," Clow said.
Sunset Home Human Resources Director, Lexis Hoener said the program gives them the resources they need to bring more CNA's to the region.
"In order to provide the best possible care that we can that really means more staff. We have a lot of great staff on hand at Sunset, but we're always looking for more compassionate friendly staff that want to make a difference," Hoener said.
At Sunset Home CNA's start at $13 an hour for day side and $14 an hour for night side.
Egan said that 30 people have gone through the program and now work in our region.
Administrators said you don't have to have any past experience to become a CNA through the program. You apply for the job, once you're hired on a staff you get access to the program, then you have to pass a state exam to receive your certification.
