CHICAGO — A man allegedly facing multiple arrest warrants was fatally shot after allegedly fleeing Amtrak police and exchanging gunfire with them, authorities said Tuesday.
Police learned the man was sought by law enforcement and was headed to Chicago’s Union Station. They managed to find him as he got off a California Zephyr train that left Emeryville during the weekend, an Amtrak spokesperson said.
“Upon meeting the individual on the platform, the suspect ran from uniformed officers injuring an Amtrak employee, and then subsequently opened fire at Amtrak Police Officers,” the statement read in part. “One officer returned fire, striking the suspect.”
In a separate statement, a Chicago police spokesperson said police responded around 5:30 p.m. CDT to reports of a weapons discharge by an Amtrak police officer who encountered a man armed with a handgun and shot him in the chest.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity and the exact nature of the warrants he was sought on were not available late Tuesday.
At least one Amtrak employee was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in good condition for treatment of facial lacerations. Service at the station was delayed briefly, but resumed soon after.
Chicago police will lead an investigation into the incident, the Amtrak spokesperson said.
