Increased meat prices bring more business to local farmer - NBC2 News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Whether it’s meat, fruit, or fresh vegetables, some are noticing their grocery list is getting more expensive.

Fort Myers resident Janie Keister went grocery shopping Wednesday evening and said her grocery bill has been rising since January.

“I was in shock when I saw the price differences,” Keister said.  “They’ve just continually gone up since January for me here.”

She said while she’s walking through the store, she has to watch the price to stay on budget. She’s noticing one item, in particular, is becoming more and more expensive.

“Meat is very high, so I have to be choosy, you know, with what I’m buying,” said Keister.

Nicole Cruz, the Owner and Operator of Circle C Farms in Bonita Springs, said the rise in meat prices or the scarcity of meat on the shelves has people flocking into her store.

“Customers that have been new to us and people in general and conversation have really shared the fact prices have gone up and it’s made it more and more difficult for them to feed their families,” Cruz said.

She said she is running into some of the same issues as larger supermarkets increased costs for materials, supplies, shipping, and fuel. Cruz raises her own poultry on her farm in Felda, which cuts down on costs for her that eventually would have been passed onto the consumer.

“It’s going to cost less because your transportation and distribution costs aren’t going to be there,” said Cruz. “We’ve been very slow to do price increases even though they’ve been increasing for us.”

Lorna McLain is the Food Assistance Director for Saint Matthews House. They’ve fed more than 215,000 families since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020.

She said they’re ramping up to feed more families in September as grocery store prices continue to rise.

“One of the things we get a lot from our recipients is the lack of meat and fresh produce they’re able to buy and purchase, it’s so expensive,” said McLain. “When we do receive meat and we do have meat to distribute our lines are longer than ever.”

Many are hoping the price hikes stop as soon as possible.

“I hope as the virus subsides that our prices will come down as well,” said Keister.
