Tropical Storm Henri still 'very potent,' could bring power outages and damage - New York Post

Tropical Storm Henri will still be a “very potent” storm when it slams the New York area Sunday afternoon, packing strong wind gusts that could bring downed power lines and destruction despite being downgraded from a hurricane, forecasters warned.

The storm is expected to narrowly miss Long Island in terms of landfall and pass just off the tip by midday — but it will still pack a local wallop, senior Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kines told The Post.

“It’ll be very close… It certainly could miss Long Island, but the impacts will be the same,” Kines said.

Closer to the eye of the storm more east, there could be gusts of wind as high as 70 mph, falling just short of hurricane status, Kines said.

“It’s still a very potent storm. It will wreak havoc across southern New England as it moves ashore, and there’s still some pretty winds,” Kines said.

Toppled trees and power outages that last for days are “probably a good bet,” Kines said.

“When the winds are that strong, you’re breaking tree branches and knocking trees down and the power lines as well,” Kines said. “If you’re outside in those winds, it’s extremely difficult to hold your ground.”

Gusts of wind could approach 40 to 45 mph in the Big Apple, but the biggest threat will likely be heavy rainfall that could flood more roads and subway stations, Kines said.

Heavy rainfall is predicted to affect "pockets" of the tri-state area, with 3 to 6 inches forecasted for portions of Long Island.

After being drenched with 4 to 5 inches of rain Saturday night, the storm’s arrival is expected to dump around another 2 inches, Kines said.

“Your best bet is to stay put and wait it out,” Kines said.

Heavier rainfall could impact “pockets” of the tri-state area, with 3 to 6 inches forecasted for portions of Long Island, southeast New York and New Jersey, Kines said.

The National Hurricane Center on Sunday issued a storm-surge advisory from Long Island north to Block Island, warning of “danger of life-threatening inundation.”

“This is a life-threatening situation. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions,” the hurricane center said.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran urged residents Sunday to stay off the roads.

“The worst of the storm is yet to come. It may seem fine now, just a normal rainstorm, but winds will pick up,” Curran said at a press briefing.

“So if you can stay out of the rain and inside please do, so that our crews, our first responders get where they need to go to help people.”
