The Detroit Beer Exchange has closed after two-and-a-half years in operation downtown.
The bar and restaurant, known for beer prices that move up and down like stock prices, opened in summer 2021 at 1260 Washington Blvd., from the same owner who opened the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange in 2010. While that location is still in operation, it never took off in Detroit.
"Dear Detroit, with a heavy heart, we must say goodbye to the city we love so much," The Beer Exchange wrote in an Instagram post. "It’s been our pleasure to have served you, if only for a few years. We are grateful to leave this little piece of Detroit in better shape than we found it and are hopeful and excited for what’s to come next to the southeast corner of Grand River Avenue and Washington Boulevard."
The location's lower-level Grand River Ballroom and Shorty Bell's Pizza are also closed.
The Beer Exchange's novelty is the "stock market" for its dozens of beers on tap. Beer prices move up and down based on supply and demand, with occasional "crashes" that for five minutes bring every beer to its lowest price.
Kalamazoo Beer Exchange had previously tried to open a location in Lansing several years ago, but the plan died before it came to fruition.
Metro Detroit has another bar with fluctuating beer prices: The Dow in Birmingham, where they move every 15 minutes, at 160 W. Maple Road, behind Dick O'Dow's.
