Another California Interscholastic Federation Northern California championship game — and another San Francisco high school team’s season — is in jeopardy due to concerns about the coronavirus.
An e-mail Sunday night from the San Francisco Unified School District to its students and parents stated that it is “canceling all non-essential events to all SFUSD schools,” effective Monday through March 22, citing guidelines set by the San Francisco Department of Public Health regarding “social distancing” in light of COVID-19.
Since all athletic events and practices fall under the umbrella of “non-essential events,” No. 2 seed Lincoln (29-4) — on the precipice of the best season in the program’s history — would have to forfeit its NorCal Division 4 boys basketball championship game Tuesday against No. 8 seed and visiting Brookside Christian-Stockton (26-8).
Lincoln, which has won 21 of its past 22 games, has never won a NorCal boys basketball title.
The district’s action comes after a parent of a Lowell student tested positive to the virus last week, shutting down the school and canceling the top-seeded girls soccer team’s Division 5 semifinal match with Chico on Thursday, ending the Cardinals’ season.
The SFUSD e-mail noted that besides Lowell, all other schools in the district would be open starting Monday.
San Francisco Section Commissioner Don Collins immediately alerted the CIF, the governing body of the high school athletics in the state, of the e-mail and offered possible solutions back to the district.
“I’ve been in education for more than 30 years and am all about precaution and safety,” Lincoln coach Carl Jacobs said. “As leaders of children, we have to have their backs. But there is no one in our community that has been infected. We have healthy young men who have worked extremely hard to reach this pinnacle event. I’m hoping we can come to a rational decision.”
Ron Nocetti, the CIF’s executive director said Sunday night that “If a district pulls their team out of an event , the CIF cannot overrule the decisions of a school district.
“That said, we know many school districts are making very difficult decisions at this time. We just went through one recently in Elk Grove. We would welcome the opportunity to engage with the SFUSD to discuss possible options allowing Lincoln to continue in this event.”
On Saturday, the Elk Grove Unified School District abruptly pulled two-time defending Open Division boys basketball champion Sheldon-Sacramento out of its tournament hours before a home semifinal game with Dublin due to reports of a possible coronavirus case in the district.
After much public outcry, the EGUSD — working with the CIF — reportedly came up with a contingency plan to get Sheldon back into the tournament.
Lincoln’s game with Bradshaw Christian has not been canceled. School and section officials are working to come up with a plan to allow the Mustangs to play. Among the options being considered is Lincoln giving up the homecourt advantage and traveling to Stockton for the game.
The NorCal winner is scheduled to play for the state title against the Southern California champion Saturday at noon at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
Besides Lowell’s soccer team and Sheldon, defending state Division 2 girls basketball champion Menlo School-Atherton withdrew from NorCal play Friday, hours before its rescheduled Division 1 quarterfinal game at Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland. That action came two days after Menlo School shut down because a relative of a staff member tested positive for the virus.
Also, Saturday’s De La Salle-Concord vs. Riordan boys basketball Division 1 semifinal was postponed until Monday due to a possible infection of a Riordan student and parent. On Sunday, that game was moved from Riordan to De La Salle.
