The Cradle of Aviation Museum is using the social media app TikTok to bring its renowned air and space museum online, helping educators and staying connected with its community during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a series of videos, under the hashtag #educatortom, the museum has quickly created and shared over 50 videos on the history of ingenuity and innovation in aerospace, generating 1.5 million views, 10,000 followers, and 100,000 likes in under one week, museum officials said.
Leading the East Garden City museum’s team is Rod Leonhard, Cradle of Aviation’s creative manager, and Tom Barry, its assistant director of education, who are producing “edutainment video bytes that are fun, interesting, and STEM related,” the museum announced. Josh Stoff, the museum’s curator, and Pete Truesdell, of restoration & collections, are the supporting crew.
“The objectives of the TikTok videos are to shine a light on some of the smaller exhibits at the Cradle of Aviation Museum and some lesser-known facts about the big ones,” Barry said. “But really, the goal of the whole thing is to remind everyone that we are still here, we are doing our jobs to the best of our abilities in this unprecedented time.”
“EducatorTom TikToks are fulfilling our mission to preserve the past and inspire the future – and they do it, one 15 second video at a time in an interesting and entertaining bite size format,” Leonhard said.
So far, the museum has produced about 50 TikToks and 20 have been released so far.
The interaction and the response has been remarkable. “The most fun has been the debates,” Barry said. “I love how people are not just accepting everything we say as law. They are questioning, asking, challenging but most importantly engaging with other people at a time when we can feel isolated.”
The most popular video so far may have been their explanation of rotary engines, of all things.
“Our post about the WW1 Gnome Monosoupape Rotary Engine accounts for over half of our 1.5m views,” Leonhard said. “It’s humorous and interesting and has sparked much debate over rotary vs. radial engines – who knew TikTok was so full of motorheads and aviation buffs?”
The team intends to continue to produce the videos, including coverage of a range of STEM topics and even ideas about sky watching.

Additionally, the museum is bringing its experience online through virtual visits to museum’s galleries with Google Street Views 360, dedicated programming on social media including replays of special events like the 50th Anniversary Apollo Dinner, at- home activity videos, and recommended lists from the museum’s curator.
The Cradle of Aviation Museum and Education Center is home to over 75 planes and spacecraft representing over 100 years of aviation history and Long Island’s only Giant Screen Dome Theater. The museum is located on Museum Row, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., in East Garden City. For more information call (516) 572-4111 or visit https://ift.tt/O1ITVj.
