Syracuse, N.Y. -- A coastal storm will bring snow Monday to parts of Upstate New York, primarily on hilltops, the Catskills and Adirondacks.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of the Southern Tier and Central New York, where 3 to 5 inches of snow could fall at higher elevations.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” said the advisory, in effect all day Monday for Broome, Cortland, Chenango, Madison, northern Oneida and Otsego counties.
Snow is likely to start before dawn Monday and last through the day, especially at over 1,300 feet above sea level. That’s about the elevation of Tully, in southern Onondaga County.
Syracuse, which sits at about 400 feet, will likely end up with less than an inch of snow. More snow will fall to the south and east as the storm slides up the East Coast, with isolated spots in the Adirondacks and Catskills getting as much as 6 to 9 inches.
Any snow that falls at lower elevations is likely to be washed away by rain as temperatures climb above into the high 40s in the afternoon. A quarter of an inch of rain could fall in Western New York, and Syracuse could get half of an inch.
Tuesday is likely to be dry and mostly cloudy, with highs in the upper 40s. sunny, but the weather service is predicting another mix of rain and wet snow for Wednesday and Thursday. At this point, the weekend looks rainy, too.
If you’re thinking of a long walk to ease your cabin fever, today’s the day, with sunny skies and highs in the low 40s.
