MIDDLETOWN — The mayor is suspending enforcement of the city’s bring-your-own-bag ordinance and directing stores to provide paper bags to customers free of charge.
The measure is effective immediately, Mayor Ben Florsheim said Friday afternoon. His announcement comes on the heels of Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order Thursday evening, which eliminated the statewide tax on plastic shopping bags, and freed supermarket employees from having to bag customers’ groceries.
The state’s law has been in effect since Aug. 1, 2019. Health officials had complained that contamination can occur with the reusable bags shoppers bring in to supermarkets and grocers.
The local law, established last October, created a 10-cent fee for paper bags at stores in Middletown. Florsheim is directing city merchants to provide paper bags free of charge, he said. The policy will remain in force until further notice.
The city’s ordinance is more restrictive than the one in force statewide.
