Local bartender, Facebook group, raise money to bring pizza to nurses - Citizen Times

ASHEVILLE - A good bartender deals not only in good drinks, but in true hospitality and comfort.

And even though a pandemic has brought congregating publicly over drinks to a grinding halt, local bartender Jax Hammond hasn't stopped trying to figure out how to nurture her community.

Hammond, who works at the Cascade Lounge, founded the Asheville Quarantine 2020 page on Facebook, where she leads a virtual happy hour and shares practical resources.

The Citizen Times is providing this story for free to readers because of the need for information about the coronavirus. We encourage you to further support local journalism by subscribing.

And now she's uniting the followers of the page over a common cause: feeding Mission Hospital nurses working the night shift with some comforting food.

The group, which has just over 1,000 members, is hosting a fundraiser to send pizza to the night staff at Mission Hospital. By the end of the day, they had raised $225, which they planned to spend at a locally owned restaurant.

"Within minutes of throwing the idea out on Asheville Quarantine page, the response was positive," Hammond said. "If we can continue to fund this, then we can continue to send more food, and support more local restaurants."

Hammond said she got the idea from family members who live in the greater New York City metro area.

"They were working to feed health care staff at the hospital I was born in," she said. "It all felt so close to home."

Nancy Lindell, who handles marketing and communications at Mission, said the food donations are good for morale.

She also said Nothing Bundt Cakes, a nationwide cake shop with a location in South Asheville, also brought in hundreds of mini-cakes as a thank you to hospital staff.

The staff had a thank you in return, according to Mission Hospital CEO Chad Patrick.

"Our team members are uplifted and find encouragement from the kindness our neighbors have shown us, and I share their sincere gratitude," he said. "I am so proud of the extraordinary efforts by our staff to care for and protect our patients and each other."
