TAMPA — Hiccups & Churroholic is coming to the Carrollwood Village Shoppes plaza with a fun combination of dishes and drinks.
Longtime electrical engineer Annie Tra and her entrepreneurial husband Kevin Tran will open the California-based restaurant mashup, uniting Asian and Latin classics that are familiar but rarely seen together under one roof. Churroholic is set to do dessert-type items, while Hiccups will appeal to the lunch and dinner crowd with several appetizers and entrees.
Tampa will welcome the first Florida location for Hiccups & Churroholic at 13030 N Dale Mabry Highway, next door to a Maple Street Biscuit Company. Franchisees Tran and Tra have projected a debut between late March and early April.
Started in 2013, the Asian-fusion chain Hiccups is the parent company of Churroholic, the 3-year-old dessert line best known for its big loop-shaped churros. Tra said she and Tran were originally looking to launch a small boba tea franchise. But then Tra, a self-proclaimed sweets enthusiast, came across Churroholic. The concept stood out.
“I thought it was very unique, and both my daughter and I love churros,” she said.
The couple took a family vacation to California to check out Churroholic and Hiccups for themselves. The trip solidified their interest in rolling out both to the Carrollwood area, as did working with Hiccups founder Sky Hoang.
“I think to get the business going, we need to have food. I think the food will kind of bring the customer in,” Tra said. “Food for lunch, and later on bring the whole family in for dessert.”
When the doors of the 1,600-square-foot location open, you’ll place dine-in and to-go orders off the Hiccups or Churroholic menu at the counter. Also expect a short list of specials during lunch.
Churroholic offerings include the main event — made-to-order churros in varieties such as original with cinnamon sugar and matcha and Fruity Pebbles — and four seasonal flavors of ice cream, which can be topped with your churro loop of choice or morphed into a churro sundae.
“The churros are always fresh. You will always have a crunchy and hot churro,” Tra said.
Entrees like kimchi and pork belly fried rice, pad Thai, the popular garlic noodles, orange chicken and beef rib pho await from Hiccups, as do appetizers such as Sriracha fries and four types of chicken wings. Don’t forget about the Mexican-inspired Chamoy Mango slushie, either.
Smoothies, other slushies, iced coffee and an array of teas that can be dressed with toppings (think honey boba or lychee coconut jelly) complete the beverage lineup.
Tra said Hiccups & Churroholic will have a modern look and incorporate decor elements like subway tile, different types of wood and industrial lighting. About 30 to 40 seats are planned inside, with room to accommodate another 20 on the patio out back.
According to their websites, Churroholic and Hiccups have existing outposts in California, Arizona and Texas. Tra said some of them are bundled together, while other locations operate separately.
“I just want to introduce people to different cultures,” Tra said. “The concept is ... not too surprising for everybody, but there’s a kick of uniqueness in it.”
