Using prayer to bring people together - KCRG

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - People are feeling the pain after watching the death of George Floyd and on Thursday, they asked for a change in their own way.

Dozens of churchgoers headed to Mays Island in downtown Cedar Rapids to pray, talk about injustice and racism. It was part of the “All-City Prayer” hosted by New City Church. It’s these conversations those attending said need to happen to make a change.

“People who feel oppressed need allies,” said LaShunda McFarland of Cedar Rapids. “There’s no way to be able to come up out of oppression if you don’t see people you attend church with, work with, and go to school with. That says, ‘I see you and we’re going to fight these things together.'”

Mcfarland said praying isn’t taking physical action against racism but said it’s bringing people together to talk about how they are doing and change. Organizers of the event said it was action in itself.

“The events that happened have left people hurting and feeling a lot of pain,” said Rod Dooley, a Pastor at New City Church. Thursday, we wanted to take that, and we wanted to begin to lift each other up. We want to walk hand-in-hand down this path of reconciliation and to where we see systematic change.”

Dooley and Mcfarland said this was only the start of a long road to change.
