6 Pacific Northwest wines that bring the summer fun - OregonLive

Nothing beats summer nights and hanging out with friends in the backyard by the grill. In my circle, everyone brings wines they think the others haven’t tried yet. The wines need to be fun, modestly priced and food-friendly.

These six wines have been big hits so far. Go buy a few bottles to jumpstart your own summer fun.

2020 Landmass Wines ‘All Eyes’ Sparkling Rosé

Melaney Schmidt and Malia Myers of Landmass Wines are sparkling wine phenoms. Their new “All Eyes” is an equal parts blend of chardonnay, gewürztraminer and tempranillo, all from the Willamette Valley. How fun is that combo?

With its strawberry blonde and copper flecks complexion, this dry, tangy beauty is right at home wherever yacht rock intersects with outdoor string lights. Frenetic bubbles lead to aromas and flavors of peaches, strawberries, wet stones and flaky pie crust. Bonus: the 500 ml. bottle is a perfect length for straws.

I found my bottle for $16 at Division Wines in Southeast Portland.

2019 Foris Winery & Vineyards Rogue Valley Pinot Blanc

If you haven’t had an Oregon pinot blanc lately, head straight to John’s Marketplace Multnomah in Southwest Portland. That’s where I found this outstanding example from Cave Junction in southern Oregon for $17.99.

This pinot blanc is the work of the talented Stephanie Pao, who makes wine for Foris founders Ted and Meri Gerber. Pao’s pinot blanc is the color of a pale moonbeam, with floral aromas that combine lemon-scented geraniums and pineapple with something quite sativa-like. Citrus-driven flavors and a soft mouthfeel make this pinot blanc easy to sip all night long.

2020 Day Wines ‘Isla’ Vermentino

Brandon Josie’s label artwork is like a 1970s travel agency poster beckoning me to the island of Vermentino. The wine inside the bottle is equally enticing.

While Day Wines is located in downtown Dundee, her “Isla” fruit is from Layne Vineyard in southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley. Its tropical fruit, saline and lemon verbena aromas mingle with a touch of something akin to cold pool water splashed onto sun-baked concrete. Flavors of lime sorbet and shredded coconut are lit up by brisk acidity. Now I want to holiday on a Mediterranean island where all the white wines are winemaker Brianne Day’s “Isla.”

This wine is available at the winery for $24.

2020 Redolent Wine Co. Rosé of Nebbiolo

Winemakers Boyd Pearson and Jon Larson took the time to haul these nebbiolo grapes from Maryhill, Washington, to Amity, Oregon. I felt duty-bound to try the wine.

Much like the winemakers themselves, this pink coral-hued wine is fun personified. The scents and flavors of white peaches, apricots peaches and raspberries put you smack dab in the middle of the Hood River Fruit Loop. A slight trace of cotton candy on the dry wine’s finish places you smack dab in the middle of the circus.

I purchased my bottle for $21 at the Portland Bottle Shop in Southeast Portland.

2020 Ricochet Wine Co. Rogue Valley Mourvèdre Rosé

Erich Berg is another talented Dundee-based winemaker who extracts pure magic from southern Oregon grapes. His rosé made with mourvèdre grapes from Carpenter Hill Vineyard in Phoenix, Oregon, is a horse of a different color compared to Redolent’s nebbiolo.

The Ricochet version of rosé is darker and savory, with enough tannic structure to suggest you are drinking a full-blown red wine. If you like wild strawberries, slices of grilled watermelon and Sungold cherry tomatoes, you will flip for this wine. It was the perfect partner for skewered shrimp on a warm summer’s night.

I discovered this wine at Vino Wine Shop in Southeast Portland for $17.99.

2019 Lumos Wine Co. Temperance Hill Vineyard Aligoté

Lumos Wine Co. founders Dai Crisp and PK McCoy join forces with winemaker Julia Cattrall to form an unbeatable wine team. Cattrall works with Crisp to make wine at a facility in McMinnville.

Crisp is also known for his twenty-two year stint managing Temperance Hill Vineyard, the home of these aligoté grapes. Aligoté is often referred to as “Burgundy’s other white grape, which seems like a diluted compliment when you taste wine this good.

Lemon, quinine water and chamomile aromas float from the glass. Flavors such as lemon gelato, thyme and toasted almonds fill every nook and cranny of the palate. This is a complex, fuller-bodied wine to be savored and discussed.

That discussion should include the question, “Where can we get more bottles?” The answer is the scenic Lumos tasting room in Philomath. The wine is a bargain at $30.
