DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers will select the contract of right-handed pitcher Drew Hutchison prior to Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians.
The 30-year-old right-hander will be pitching in his first big-league game since Aug. 31, 2018, when he was with the Texas Rangers.
Hutchison won’t formally join the roster until Sunday, so he won’t be allowed to watch Saturday’s game from the dugout. But he was on the field warming up prior to the game, so it was difficult for manager A.J. Hinch to keep the secret.
It’s impossible to fully prepare someone to pitch in a game while waiting until the last minute, especially with a day game tomorrow. So we asked him to come in and play catch and he’ll be activated tomorrow,” Hinch said.
That means, of course, that someone will be sent out after Saturday’s game. Relievers Ian Krol, Erasmo Ramirez, Derek Holland and Buck Farmer are all potential candidates to be designated for assignment, which would clear a spot on the active roster and the 40-man roster.
“This is a big-boy business,” Hinch said. “We try to be as fair as we can, but also as open as we can with players, coaches, you guys (the media) and fans. Unfortunately some guys are looking over their shoulders a little bit, but it’s a 24-hour part of the business.”
Hutchison, who turns 31 one week from Sunday, was drafted out of Lakeland (Fla.) Senior High School by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009. (He was high school teammates with Red Sox ace Chris Sale, who was activated to make his first start of the season on Saturday).
He was a regular in the Blue Jays’ rotation in 2014 and was even Opening Day starter in 2015, when he 13-5 with a 5.57 ERA (4.42 FIP) as part of a 93-win team that went to the American League Championship Series.
Hutchison was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2016 and has also pitched briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies and Rangers.
He bounced around three organizations in 2019, played independent ball in 2020 and then signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers in February.
He was 8-3 with a 3.67 ERA in 131 innings this year at Triple-A Toledo. He’s struck out 133 and walked 54.
The Tigers’ current roster before the addition of Hutchison is below:
