The Emerson Global Users Exchange is a well-known conference on the automation industry event calendar. The opportunity to interact and learn from peers, to get an insight into product roadmaps, and to get up close to control systems, process instruments, valves, and many other technologies, attracts thousands of Emerson Automation Solutions' customers to events in the US and Europe every year.
The pandemic, of course, eliminated the chance of physical gatherings in 2020 and 2021, but as Bob Halgren, Director of Marketing and Digital Transformation, Asia Pacific, told me during an ARC Executive Interview, the company hosted the Americas and EMEA Exchange events in a virtual format, and it was the success of those events that provided the inspiration to bring Emerson Exchange to Asia Pacific for the first time this October (26-28).
Aside from talking about the first Emerson Exchange in Asia Pacific, Bob Halgren, who joined Emerson Automation Solutions business in Singapore earlier this year after almost a decade working with the company in the US, touches on a number of other issues in this discussion with ARC.
These include:
- how he combines the marketing and digital transformation aspects of his somewhat novel portfolio
- what digital transformation actually means at Emerson and the key elements of its solution set
- how the topic of sustainability and decarbonization is moving from the periphery to center stage – for Emerson as well as its customers.

On the Agenda
So back to Emerson Exchange. What can delegates expect to experience at the inaugural Asia Pacific event? Well, as outlined by Mr Halgren, on the agenda are over 140 conference sessions, including over 40 delivered by users themselves. It is these customer presentations that are always very popular at Exchange events, as there’s nothing quite like hearing and learning how other users tackled tough challenges similar perhaps to those you may be facing, and the type and extent of benefits realized through technology adoption and deployment
In addition, the product roadmap sessions will give delegates the opportunity to hear the latest on those new features recently released or that will be released in the next 6-12 months’ time frame. And the industry forums take place in a panel discussion format, with experts chiming in on the current dynamics and the likely future landscape of industry sectors, such as life sciences, chemicals, oil & gas, food & beverage, power, and water & wastewater.
Spotlight on Sustainability
Emerson Exchange Asia Pacific will have significant emphasis on the increasingly important topic of sustainability and decarbonization, says Bob Halgren. Beyond being good corporate citizens and making financial savings from lower energy costs, he sees more and more Emerson clients viewing the sustainability space as a competitive differentiator, as their customers become more inclined to buy a product if it has a lower green footprint than a similar offering from another supplier.
As he further articulated during the interview: “We view sustainability and decarbonization as our collective shared responsibility over the next several decades that will spur innovation and inspire what we do.
“It’s inspiring to consider that the people within manufacturing and automation are uniquely positioned to affect change to help address the global challenges we’re seeing. I feel like this really gives meaning to a lot of the work that we collectively do. We have several initiatives we are working to help make a difference, and we’re excited to be a part of the solution.”
