It was all Blue in the Redbird Red Flight as Leon Huck and Lars Peder Minsaas battled their way to the championship outscoring Illinois State's Diego Herrera and Dominick Cuchran 2-1 in the Davis Cup format.
Huck and Minsaas each recorded a point with singles wins to offset the ISU's lone point in its doubles victory. Huck swept Herrera 6-2, 6-3 while his partner posted a comeback win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 against Cuchran.
After falling in the first round of the White Flight on Friday, Sven Moser and Phasu Sirinit bounced back with wins over Bellarmine on Saturday and Illinois State on Sunday to claim the Consolation Bracket title.
After dropping the doubles match to the Redbirds' Zane Kohrs and Zacharis Rasmusson, the DePaul duo came through with a singles sweep for a 2-1 victory.
Moser edged Kohrs in a nail-biter winning the first set 6-4, losing the second set 6-2 and hanging tough through five tiebreaks in the decisive set for a 7-6 victory.
Sirinit also split the first two sets, winning 6-3 before Rasmusson took set No. 2 by the same score. Sirinit came out on top by a 7-5 score in the final set.
In the Black Flight, Matteo Iaquinto and Jona Gitschel fell to Saint Louis 3-0 in the third-place match.
"Leon and Lars came back and got the job done on the singles court, as did Sunny (Phasu Sirinit) and Sven," said DePaul coach Matt Brothers who rested his top returning players Vito Tonejc, Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar along with freshman Marino Jakic after their five days at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. "Overall, it was a great weekend of tennis for us."
Next up for DePaul is the Louisville Invitational with first serve on Friday.
