Steven Byrne was the officer wounded in an exchange of gunfire Saturday with a suspect near Crozer-Chester Medical Center, officials said.
Byrne was said to be “doing well” by Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer but further details on his injuries were not available.
Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky posted this to social media on Saturday night: “This investigation is being handled by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office Criminal Investigation Division. If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact Detective Michael Jay at 610-891-4700.”
Gretsky added that Byrne was expected to be released soon from the hospital.
The suspect in the case was reported to be sought in a homicide investigation. His name and further details of the alleged crime to which he was linked have not been released.
The suspect was reported as “down” at the scene by an officer with Byrne, then later reported to be in critical condition, and shortly thereafter dead.
The role of the second officer at the scene was not yet clear, as also were the specifics of the encounter and who fired.
The gunfire exchange happened after police were following a vehicle for a period of time.
“The officer tried to apprehend a person driving a vehicle,” Stollsteimer added without being more specific.
Police radio traffic yielded these preliminary details:
Chester police were following a vehicle shortly after 3:30 p.m., with an Upland officer joining a short time later.
After following for several minutes and a brief chase, the suspect’s vehicle crashed about 3:45 at Arbor Drive and 14th Street, which is also Upland Avenue, at the edge of Crozer-Chester campus.
There was an exchange of gunfire. Byrne was off to the hospital and the suspect was reported to be “down,” but a dispatcher reported an ambulance was on the way there.
Two officers were shot in East Lansdowne earlier this month as they responded to a house on Lewis Avenue where a gunman was believed to be killing his family members. The house was soon on fire. Six sets of remains were recovered and the identification process and investigation continues.
One officer was released from a hospital the next day and the other a day later.
Well-wishes for Byrne poured in after the Saturday night shooting and included:
From Darby police: “Our thoughts are with Chester City Police and our FOP Lodge 19 brother who was shot in the line of duty. Thankful he is expected to recover. 3 Delco officers shot in 10 days. Violence against police needs to stop. #EnoughIsEnough @PA_FOP @GLFOP”
From Lansdowne police: “Sending thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters in blue at City of Chester Police Department. This is the third officer in Delaware County shot this month.”
