HURON COUNTY, MI - An argument between ice fishermen nearly turned deadly as one almost drowned Friday in Saginaw Bay, police said.

Deputies responded around 10 a.m., Feb. 23 to an ice-covered canal in the bay off the end of Kilmanagh Road in Sebewaing Township, according to the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.

Three Sebewaing men told deputies they were fishing on the ice when another man from the area and a passenger pulled up next to them on an airboat, police said. The driver and the three men, who know each other, got into “a heated exchange likely triggered by an old, unsettled dispute,” police said.

The airboat driver drove away and made a turn around the three men when he left, breaking ice all around them, police said. While two of the fishermen escaped to solid ice, one fell into 8-foot-deep water, police said.

The man in the water struggled to stay afloat while wearing heavier clothing, police said. The two other fishermen rescued him while the airboat left the scene, police said.

The man requested no medical attention, police said. Deputies on scene attempted to contact the airboat driver with no success, police said.

The incident will be forwarded to the Huron County Prosecutor’s Office to evaluate possible charges, police said.
