Country music star and former Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker's arrest in Franklin, has spurred some questions about his charges.
The musician was charged with two counts of simple possession and casual exchange and one count of violation of registration law following an arrest in Williamson County. The 57-year-old musician was released on Thursday after posting a $10,500 bond.
In Tennessee, the charges are considered misdemeanors (with some exceptions).
So just what is simple possession and casual exchange? And what could Rucker face if found guilty?
What is simple possession? Casual exchange?
Under Tennessee law, simple possession refers to when a person has an amount of a controlled substance on them.
"It is an offense for a person to knowingly possess or casually exchange a controlled substance, unless the substance was obtained directly from, or pursuant to, a valid prescription or order of a practitioner while acting in the course of professional practice," reads the Tennessee law.
As for casual exchange, according to a 2012 opinion by the state attorney general, the phrase means "the spontaneous passing of a small amount of an illegal drug, regardless whether money is received for the exchange of the illegal drug."
What is the penalty for simple possession in Tennessee?
According to Tennessee Code 39-17-48, simple possession is a misdemeanor. The punishment for a conviction ranges from no jail time to up to a year in jail. The fine for simple possession can be as little as $250 and upwards of $2,500, depending on convictions.
Has Darius Rucker said anything about the charges?
So far, Rucker has yet to say anything about the charges except through his lawyer. In a statement provided to The Tennessean, Rucker's attorney Mark Puryear said the singer is "fully cooperating with authorities related to the misdemeanor charges."
