Local restaurant finding ways to bring meals and hope to struggling families - WKOW

FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- With two restaurants to run in Dane County, and another set to open, Dave Heide is staying positive in the face of uncertainty regarding the intertwining future of his businesses and the spread of COVID-19 in the United States.

"I've almost never had a problem with saying positive," he said. "I will tell you, it's definitely been trying the last week."

He runs Liliana's Restaurant In Fitchburg and Charlie's on Main in Oregon. He's also set to open a non-profit restaurant called Little John's that aims to be a pay-what-you-can kind of place, which takes excess food in the community and turns out affordable meals.

When it comes to Liliana's and Charlie's, Heide has had to make some tough decisions regarding staffing, as the state-wide shuttering of restaurant dining rooms and bars has taken a very rapid toll on the industry.

He'll have to worry about his own businesses as the days and weeks stretch on, but his thoughts also lay with the community-at-large.

"I'm really terrified for my community," Heide said. "I'm just worried about what I can do to be there for them and help them out when they need it."

His solution has been to take the Little John's model and apply it to Liliana's and Charlie's. The restaurants are currently ramping up deliveries and curbside service, but there are opportunities to help others.

"We have a bunch of restaurants in the area and since they've had to shutter their dining rooms, they have a bunch of excess food," said Heide. "We've been able to take a lot of that and process it and turn it into other meals that we can keep providing for people."

Soup is $5 with that pay-what-you-can price point, but community members can also purchase soup for others. The funds go towards helping get healthful food to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, and homeless shelters like the Beacon and Porchlight to serve.

He said Boys and Girls Club alone has hundreds of kids that could use a good meal.

"Anything people can do to help out would be absolutely incredible," he said.

As for the future, Heide said he's optimistic about the short-term. But it's the long-term effects that worry him.

"We really, really, really need your support because everyone's coming out now. It's so great, thank you," he said. "But just keep remembering to keep on doing it as long as we can, you know, to make sure that there are some restaurants left when this is all over."

Hi Everyone! We just got the order from the Governor that our restaurants are to close their dining rooms as of 5:00...
