Two new coronavirus cases have been reported in Long Beach, officials announced Thursday, March 19, bringing the city’s total to 12; three people, however, have recovered.
About 130 people are currently being monitored, according to the city.
One case so far has been traced back to community transmission, meaning the person did not have any known travel to areas where COVID-19 outbreaks have been reported.
The origin of the two new cases reported Thursday is currently unclear.
The news came a day after the Health Department reported that there was possible coronavirus exposure at Willard Elementary School on Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13, when school was still in session.
A spokesman for the Long Beach Unified School District said about 700 students attended school at Willard on Thursday, and about 650 attended on Friday. The school has about 60 total staff members.
Also on Wednesday, the VA Long Beach Healthcare System reported its first case of the coronavirus and closed to visitors. That case is not and will not be included in the Long Beach tally because the person is not a Long Beach resident.
COVID-19, which stands for coronavirus disease 2019, is caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2. Symptoms associated with the respiratory disease, which appear two-to-14 days after exposure, include fever, a cough and shortness of breath. While most people — including healthy young adults — will experience mild symptoms, the disease can be severe and possibly fatal for at-risk groups, such as the elderly and those with other health problems.
