SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Usually one can walk into Apple Blossom Flower Shop (381 Park Ave., Scotch Plains) and be happy. The smell and the sight of fresh flowers -- along with a wide variety of candy -- typically bring a smile to people's faces. But like everything else, coronavirus has dramatically impacted business.
Weddings, bar mitzvahs, and even funerals are put on hold, and florists, such as Apple Blossom and Scotchwood Florist (265 South Ave., Fanwood), have seen their revenues plummet.
Lisa Mohn of Apple Blossom wanted to come up with something to bring beauty to people's lives and, at the same time, help first responders. Other towns had started similar campaigns, but Scotch Plains and Fanwood launched the rainbow campaign as an extension of the rainbow art work that children have been putting in their windows during the coronavirus social distancing. The idea has taken off; in just a few days, Apple Blossom has sold over 200 Corona Rainbows.
"People have to call first," said Mohn, owner of Apple Blossom and president of the Scotch Plains Business and Professional Association. "They pull up in the back of the store. We come out and put them in the trunk of the car. We ask that people put the money in a plastic bag when they give it to us."
Mohn enlisted the help of Scotch Plains Deputy Manager Margaret Heisey to help get the word our and quickly got assistance from Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr to make it a community-wide effort.
