STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Stevens Point Police Department is reminding residents that safe exchange zones, such as the one they recently marked in their parking lot, are for the in-person exchange of goods or children.

Officers say in recent weeks they’ve noticed residents leaving goods unattended in the parking spaces, items that were later taken by someone else. They say in such situations, they can’t guarantee that the appropriate person got the goods they were looking for.

They’re also looking to chat with the people who left the items in the zone so they can explain the rules to them, and allow them to get the items they left.

Safe exchange zones are often located near law enforcement buildings and are monitored by security cameras. They are intended to offer a safe exchange of goods being sold or traded through places like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. They can also offer a controlled environment for the exchange of children between parents who share custody.
