Pamela formed Sunday in the Eastern Pacific and reached to a category one hurricane. Most recent updates show Pamela at a tropical storm Tuesday before strengthening again to a category one before making landfall in Mexico. The system will likely bring heavy rain into Texas by midweek.
Pamela is moving north at 6 mph with winds now of 70 mph. The current track has the storm moving onshore into Wednesday morning. The storm is forecast to become a category one storm and before it makes landfall.
At this current time, heavy rain and gusty winds are anticipated across Mexico. Life-threatening storm surge will also be possible as the storm moves onshore.
The heaviest of the rainfall will be right along Mexico’s western coastline, with rain over 6″ possible in some locations. This could cause landslides or mudslides especially over mountainous terrain.
Pamela will be pulled north by a strong jet stream diving through the Western US. It will bring the potential of significant rain to parts of Texas starting Wednesday and continuing into Thursday.
The combination of a slower moving system with ample amounts of moisture will bring a potential for flooding. A combination of Flash Flood Watches and Flood Watches have already been issued for areas north of Dallas, Austin and San Antonio southward to the Rio Grande.
Rainfall totals could climb above 6″ in portions of Texas. This will be enhanced by the approaching cold front, along with the tropical moisture moving north with Pamela. The moisture will extend even farther northwest than the watches show. Areas into Arkansas and Missouri seeing marginal to slight outlooks of excessive rainfall Wednesday.
The next name after Pamela is Rick. Additional development over the next five days is not expected.
