‘We don’t know what the next stage is going to bring,’ Ypsilanti mayor says - MLive.com

YPSILANTI, MI – Amid the fear and uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, Ypsilanti City Council met Tuesday, March 17, and cruised through a light agenda in nine minutes.

No one from the public was there to speak when Mayor Beth Bashert opened the floor for public comments. She noted it would be an abbreviated meeting.

“We are holding this meeting during a very stressful time in our history,” she said. “This is unprecedented and we don’t know what the next stage is going to bring.”

Bashert said there’s uncertainty about city meetings going forward, what level of the city will be open week to week and which businesses will be open.

“I just want to encourage the city and council and staff to all be patient and supportive of each other as we make our decisions based on a quickly changing situation,” she said.

“Whatever decisions we make and whatever choices we make are all going to be with the health and safety of our community at the heart of it all.”

Bashert shared a message from the desk of City Manager Frances McMullan on Monday, saying the city is continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and non-essential city services are closed through April 5.

That includes all non-essential programming at Parkridge and the Ypsilanti Senior Center until further notice, though nutrition and meal programs will continue at both facilities.

Meetings of Ypsilanti boards and commissions are canceled through April 5.

Trash and recycling pickup services, as well as police and fire services, will continue, though fire department responses to medical calls are being limited to reduce the risk of exposure, according to McMullan’s message, and Huron Valley Ambulance will be handling most medical calls.
